My insurer cancelled me and DHSMV took my tag. How do I get FR44 and my tag back?
Turning in the tag does not end the FR44 requirement. It just means you may not have a vehicle to insure right now.
We've talked to people who thought the DUI plus a cancelled State Farm policy meant they had to buy another car first. You do not. If no vehicle is in your name, non-owner FR44 at 100/300/50 is usually how you get the certificate back on file. If you are keeping or replacing a car, that is owner coverage, and you need the policy before the tag office will be happy.
State Farm dropping you is common after a DUI. We shop 15+ carriers that still write FR44, then we file electronically with the DHSMV the same day you purchase. Filing same day is not same-day printed license, and you still handle DUI school and reinstatement fees on the DHSMV side.
