Filing

Can an FR44 be added to my current insurance policy?

Sometimes. It depends on two things: whether your carrier files FR44s at all, and whether your current policy already carries the limits Florida requires.

The FR44 is a filing your insurance company makes to the DHSMV confirming you carry 100/300/50 liability. If your carrier files FR44s and you are willing to raise your limits to 100/300/50, they can usually add the filing to the policy you already have. Your policy number stays the same and the filing goes out against it.

Where it falls apart is when your carrier does not do FR44 filings. Plenty of companies write ordinary Florida auto insurance and will not touch a post-DUI filing. In that case there is nothing to add the FR44 to, and you need a policy from a carrier that will file. We have talked to people who paid for a policy first and only found out afterward that it could not be filed as an FR44.

The other common surprise is the limits. Most drivers are not carrying 100/300/50 before a DUI, so adding the filing usually means raising coverage substantially, and that is what changes the price. The filing is not the expensive part. The coverage underneath it is.

Call your current carrier and ask two questions: do you file Florida FR44s, and what would my premium be at 100/300/50. If either answer is bad, we can shop it.
