My FR44 requirement ends mid-term. Do I have to pay for the whole policy term?
Carriers write policy terms. The DHSMV writes the FR44 end date. Those two calendars rarely line up.
We've talked to people with two or three months left who were quoted a six month FR44 policy because that is the term the company sells. You can usually keep the certificate on that term and then drop the FR44 filing once FLHSMV shows the requirement is actually over. Cancelling the day you think you are done, without checking the state record, is how a lapse notice shows up.
Do not let coverage die early. If the requirement is truly finished mid-term, we can look at removing the FR44 and re-shopping regular coverage. Cost still varies, and leftover premium is a carrier contract issue.
